The Winter Games – Languages at Sochi 2014

sochi 2014This year, the Olympic Winter Games will be the held for first time  in the Russian Federation – the Soviet Union hosted the 1980  Summer Games in Moscow. The host city Sochi has a population of 400,000 people and is situated in Krasnodar, which is the third largest region in Russia.

Spectators visiting Russia for the Olympics needn’t be afraid of having any problems as police supervising the event will be able to converse with spectators in three languages: English, French and German, says the Russian Interior Ministry.

More than 40,000 law enforcement officials will be deployed in securing the games, which run February 7th to 23rd, and many of them will have learnt the basics of the three languages after going through intensive training courses, the ministry said in a statement.

However, should the cops find themselves tongue-tied, they will be able to call a 24-hour hotline where multilingual volunteers will be on hand to convey what they want to say, the ministry said. Phrasebooks have also been distributed as a fallback.
