Lions at the Venice Film Festival

The ‘Lions’ will come out again at the 66th Venice Film Festival (La Biennale di Venezia) in Italy between 2 and 12 September 2009. The ‘Lions’ are the Lion Awards given to the films within different categories at this prestigious film event. The Golden Lion is given for Best Film.  This year, the opening film will be the Italian film BAARÌA, written and directed by Guiseppe Tornatore (director of Meléna and Cinema Paradiso) – the first Italian film to open the Venice Film Festival for more than 20 years.

The official line-up of this year’s Venice Film Festival were announced in August  and  include the following competitions: Venezia 66 – Out of Competition – Orizzonti – Controcampo Italiano – Corto Cortissimo.  The Jury of the Venezia 66 this year will be chaired by the world-famous director Ang Lee. Ang Lee has directed acclaimed films such as ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’.  Last year’s Golden Lion went to Darren Aronofsky’s film ‘The Wrestler’ (USA).
