La Tomatina, Spain

La Tomatina is held this year on Wednesday 31st August 2011 and is said to be the world’s biggest and most outrageous food fight! Using over-ripe tomatoes, thousands take to the streets and throw tomatoes at anyone and everyone in this tomato festival on the last Wednesday in August each year in a town called Buñol in Valencia, Spain.

No-one quite knows how the tradition of throwing tomatoes started, but it is said to have begun in 1945 when a group of young men decided to join a procession uninvited. Not happy with this ‘gate crashing’, a fight broke out and tomatoes were thrown.  The following year, the group tried to recreate the scene, but were stopped by police and a ban was put in place. It is said that in 1955, the Burial of the Tomato was held, where a giant tomato in a coffin was paraded through the streets. Impressed by the persistence and passion of the group, La Tomatina festival was given the official go ahead in 1957. Now the tomato throwing festival is world-famous and increasingly wild.
