The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, UK

We’re gearing up for our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations which will take place in the UK between the 2nd – 5th June 2012. The celebrations mark 60 years of the Queen’s reign. There will be concerts, a huge Thames River Pageant, special exhibitions in museums and galleries as well as street parties up and down the country.

Queen Elizabeth II was born in 1926 and came to the throne on the 6th February 1956 but she wasn’t crowned until the 2nd June 1953 which is why the Jubilee celebrations are taking place between the 2nd and 5th June this year. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002. The only other British monarch to have celebrated a Diamond Jubilee previously was Queen Victoria in 1897.

The UK and many other countries around the world will be watching and joining in with the celebrations this weekend. The UK has an extended Bank Holiday (on Monday 4th June & Tuesday 5th June) to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.
