Thanksgiving Day USA

Today is Thanksgiving Day in the USA. It is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday in November and traditionally began as a celebration to give thanks for the harvest for the year. It is one of the major holidays in the United States along with Christmas and the New Year holidays.

It is said that the modern Thanksgiving holiday was first celebrated in 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA in celebration for a good harvest that year. A great feast was made to celebrate the harvest and this festivity has been observed since. Families and friends gather on Thanksgiving to have dinner and to spend time together . The traditional Thanksgiving dinner includes a baked or roasted turkey with mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes, vegetables and pumpkin or apple pie for dessert.

In New York City, the famous department store Macy’s holds the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade every year on Thanksgiving Day. The parade features many floats and marching bands and ends with a Santa Claus float.

Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day is also observed in other countries such as Canada, Liberia and Puerto Rico.
