It seems that us Brits just can’t get enough of all films French which is proving a huge boost to the French cinema industry. Unifrance, which promotes French films overseas, says that the rise in attendance for French films in the UK is not down to just one film but to several films and a growing appetite for French films, in the UK.

The Oscar Winners Are …

The 84th Annual Academy Awards ® were held yesterday on the 26th February 2012 in Hollywood. There were several award categories at the Awards ceremony, also known as the Oscars ®, including awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress and, of course, Best Foreign Language Film. The Iranian film, A Separation (in Persian) won the award for Best Foreign Language Film directed by Asghar Farhadi.

Angelina Jolie Film Nominated In Foreign Language Category For The 2012 Golden Globe Awards

Controversial film ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’, directed, produced and written by American actress, Angelina Jolie, has been nominated in the Foreign Language category for the 2012 Golden Globe Awards. The film is a love story set during the 1992-1995 conflict in Bosnia and was simultaneously filmed in both Serbo-Croat and the English language.

French Film Wins 2011 LUX Film Prize

French director Robert Guédiguian has won the European Parliament’s 2011 LUX film Prize for his film, ‘ Les neiges du Kilimandjaro’ (France). The film’s story deals with the injustice of today’s societies and pleads for tolerance. The European Parliament’s President, Jerzy Buzek, presented the prize to the film’s producer in Strasbourg. The two other finalists in the competition were “Attenberg” (Greece) and “Play” (Sweden-France-Denmark).

Venice Film Festival 2011

It’s good to see so many non-English speaking films, actors & directors competing at the Venice Film Festival.  Winners were announced on 10 September 2011 and include:

  • the Golden Lion award for the best film Faust, a German legend, by the Russian director Alexander Sokurov
  • the Silver Lion award for the best director Shangjun Cai (China – Hong Kong) for the film Ren Shan Ren Hai (People Mountain People Sea)
