| British
Deaf Association |
|
|
The
British Deaf Association is a UK-based organisation run by Deaf people
for Deaf people. The BDA's vision is of a world where Deaf people
who use sign language enjoy the same rights, responsibilities, opportunities
and quality of life as everyone. On 18 March 2003, the British Government
took the formal step of recognising British Sign Language (BSL) as
a language in its own right. The BDA is now building a national BSL
Academy to train more people in BSL as there are 70,000 profoundly
Deaf people in the UK but less than 200 interpreters to assist with
all their educational, health and other day-to-day needs.

| Plan
International |

Plan
is an independent global organisation dedicated to working with and
for children. They believe that all children deserve their basic rights
to health, education and a future where they can realise and demonstrate
their true potential.
We work together
with children and their families within communities in 45 countries,
to break down the barriers to the achievement of their basic rights,
identifying problems and designing long-term solutions.
We promised to sponsor a project with Plan as an incentive for you
to fill in Languages at Work 2002
- a global survey by www.languageadvantage.com. We have donated
to an education project in Senegal. A big thank you to all of you
who participated in the survey!
Being a personal sponsor is also a great way to practise your new
language skills and to develop an in depth understanding of a new
culture. I'm a personal sponsor of a young Spanish-speaking girl
in Honduras who is the same age as my son. It is amazing when you
receive letters ... in Spanish of course ... from your sponsored
child and find out about their day-to-day lives. My Spanish is just
about good enough to write back in Spanish now - but in the meantime
Plan will translate your letters for you!
